Research projects on packaging and 3D printing

Artevelde University of Applied Sciences is a centre for research and development. We dedicate ourselves to practice-oriented research, that contributes to educational innovation, modernisation, professionalisation of the work field and social services.
All projects are set up in collaboration with external partners such as governments, companies, civil society, national and international consortiums, networks, etc.

Practice-based scientific research
Researchers, students and external partners collaborate yearly on research projects to translate societal problems in practical solutions.

Valorization – the implementation of research results in society – is an essential strategy for practice-based research. Therefore, the results and expertise achieved during PSR-projects are deployed as much as possible in the societal field by organizing activities such as education, training, consultancy, coaching, counselling and follow-on research. All these are realized both pro-active or at the request of partners – always tailored to the needs of our partners.

Science communication
Another aspect of our social mission is to introduce research and science to the general public. With our many activities in science communication, we reach children, adolescents and adults and introduce them to various domains in science and technology.

One of our current research projects in the field of Graphic & Digital Media is Hack the Pack: finding your way around sustainable packaging. Watch a synopsis of the project in the video below.

In September, two new projects will kick off:
  • PackLab (follow-up of Hack the Pack)
  • Management of colour and texture in full-colour 3D-printing
In the one-pagers below (PDFs), you can learn more about these new projects.

Summer schools on flexible packaging and 3D printing

Every year, the Graphic & Digital Media department of Artevelde UAS offers two summer schools to students and staff from partner institutions:
  • the Honours Class in Flexible Packaging
  • the Summer Class 3D modeling & printing
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to suspend our summer classes in 2020 and this year.
But, we turn this setback into an opportunity to rethink our summer schools. We'll return in 2022 with an even more innovative and unique programme for our summer classes!

Honours Class Flexible Packaging
The honours class aims at highlighting the production of packaging, mainly focusing on the prepress and file handling related topics. We highlight packaging because it is a constant growing market segment in the graphic industry and the sector continues to drive forward packaging innovation globally, including areas such as disposability and recycling.

The Graphic and Digital Media department of Artevelde UAS organizes this class in cooperation with Esko. Esko (www.esko.com) is a global supplier of integrated solutions for the packaging and label, sign and display, commercial printing  and publishing industries. The training itself is provided by the professional trainers of Esko and logistically supported by staff of Artevelde UAS.

Read more about the programme in the flyer below (PDF).

International Summer Class 3D modeling & printing
3D printing is a technology that was developed more than 20 years ago, but only the last years, companies discover the possibilities of this technique for different applications. The technology is already used often in prototyping and small series production, but also marketing has discovered the possibilities of 3D in campaigns. There’s more and more the demand of creating a 3D object starting from a 2D design.

A good 3D print starts with the design and modeling of a virtual object. During this Summer Class, you will be trained in the different modeling techniques which enable you to create your own printable 3D object. The Graphic and Digital Media department of Artevelde UAS organizes this class with other partners like Flam3D, i.materialise, TimeLab and VossChemie. All of them are experts in one of the domains of 3D printing.
