GLUECOM Group – DEMCOPACK – PLAKAL

GLUECOM GROUP Acquires Fritz Hacker Plakal Jelly glues - Gelatin adhesives - Proteïn adhesives

The Belgian group Gluecom, manufacturer of industrial adhesives, has taken over the product range of its German sector colleague Fritz Haecker.

Both companies are world leaders in the development, production and sale of protein-based adhesives (also called 'jelly glues'), a niche in the industrial adhesives market. These adhesives are used in the graphic industry and in luxury cardboard for the production of books, photo albums, agendas, ring binders, board games, luxury packaging and various other applications.

The brand names 'Plakal' by Fritz Haecker and 'Demcopack' by Gluecom are sold in more than 80 countries worldwide. The German Fritz Haecker was founded in 1885, making it one of the oldest active adhesive companies in the world. "Production will be transferred to the Gluecom branch in Lokeren," says Louis Piette, managing director of Gluecom.

Closing material cycles
Gelatin glues are not only versatile but also durable. The adhesives are biodegradable and compostable in combination with paper and cardboard.

In order to focus even more on sustainability, Gluecom participated earlier this year in the call of Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA), who offered financial support to make Flanders a leading recycling hub. Gluecom, together with seven other Flemish companies, was selected for its innovative recycling techniques to close material cycles.

From waste to glue
"The aim is to keep materials in the cycle for longer, to reduce the waste mountain and at the same time to prevent the extraction of new raw materials. Gluecom is responding to this with the gelatin adhesives project based on recyclate from the pharmaceutical industry," says Louis Piette. Gluecom developed a process to recycle gelatin recyclate on a small scale into animal glue. Partly thanks to government support, the process will be scaled up and in the long term a large part of production will switch to recyclates to process pharmaceutical gelatin waste into glue.

In addition to gelatin glues, the Gluecom group is also a producer of dispersion glues and hot melts, with production sites in Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. At the beginning of this year, Gluecom already acquired the British adhesive manufacturer Pafra. With these acquisitions, the group's consolidated turnover may exceed fifty million euros for the first time in 2023.
